When twenty-seven-year-old Jessica Hyde takes the position of personal secretary to charismatic twin brothers, Reed and Shane Masters, she gets more than she bargained for.   Chapter One

  “I do have a mommy and daddy, don’t I?”

The uncertainty that was etched on the angelic face of Reed Masters’s three-year-old niece instinctively made him hunker down to her level.

“Ellie May, what would you like to do today, pumpkin? What would you like to play?”

He felt for her. The kid had been to hell and back.

The enchanting child had tears in her eyes as she spoke. “I don’t want to play. I never want to play again.”

Desperate to distract her from the painful subject of her parents’ absence, Reed scooped her favorite toy from the floor, and then playfully nuzzled it against her neck.

“Don’t want to play, huh? Well, Puffalump here wants to play, even if you don’t.” He teased her with the yellow stuffed elephant until she finally relented and giggled with childish glee.

“No, Uncle Reed. No, that tickles.” Laughing hysterically now, she tried in vain to push him away. “Stop it. Stop it. I don’t like tickles anymore.”

Reed had always thought of himself as a tough guy. A man who, just like his twin brother, Shane, could deal with any shit that life dared to throw at him. However, the distress and upheaval that Ellie May was going through right now really tugged at his heartstrings.

The future was starting to look better than the past though. As each day became the next, Ellie May was slowly starting to rejoin the world. In a year from now, Reed doubted the little girl with the cute button nose and froth of blonde curls would have any recollection of the traumatic events that had taken place. Exactly one month after the tragic accident had cruelly taken four members of his extended family, the tearful episodes and horrific night terrors that had so bedeviled the three-year-old were now becoming less frequent. In some ways the Masters were not dissimilar to the Kennedys because fate had been cruel to both families.

Now playing happily on the floor, Ellie May was engrossed in a conversation with Puffalump and a variety of other stuffed toys. She had them lined up in a row like soldiers on parade, and sternly wagged a finger at them all.

“If you are not good toys then I’m going to tell Mom—” She suddenly stopped midsentence as though contemplating what she had just said. After quizzically looking at hi
m for a moment or two she continued. “If you are all good boys and girls, and none of you are naughty then we can all have some candy later on.”

She stared expectantly up at him from her cross-legged position on the floor. “We can have some candy, can’t we, Uncle Reed? Look how good we’ve all been.”

Reed ruffled an unruly bundle of golden locks. “Of course you can, pumpkin. What do you say I take you out and buy us both the biggest ice cream in the world?”

Ellie May clapped her hands together with unbridled delight. “Yesss.”

As for being responsible for looking after his adorable three-year-old niece, Reed hadn’t seen it coming… How could he? How could anyone? In fact, when he’d answered his cell phone late on that fateful night, he had been in good spirits. Business was booming and he and Shane had just signed a lucrative contract in China for three hundred fifty million dollars’ worth of next generation computer operating systems. Over the next five years, this huge and relatively untapped new market could be worth literally billions of dollars to Masters Advanced Technology—a company Shane and he had started from their bedrooms at the tender age of nineteen, with the help of a five thousand dollar loan from their father. They paid back the loan to their old man, and the interest that went with it, well before they reached their twenty-first birthdays. That was more than sixteen years ago now, and their company had gone from strength to strength in that time. Last year alone, Masters Advanced Technology, or MAT for short, made pre-tax profits of more than four hundred thirty million bucks. Now they were established players in this cutthroat market. Reed and his twin brother Shane were gunning for no less than Microsoft.

Almost a month ago to the day, he had initially taken the call with a smile to his face. “Reed Masters speaking.” The smile instantly disappeared when the person on the other end of the line solemnly informed him that he was a police officer, calling from Mount Sinai Hospital, New York State.

At first he had been suspicious, and insisted on getting the name and badge number of the cop in question. In his line of business, industrial espionage was commonplace with competitors willing to sink to any level to know what he and Shane already knew. “Whoever you are, this had better be on the level.”

“I can assure you that I am who I say I am, Mr. Masters, but please feel free to check me out further if you are unsure, sir.”

“I’ll do just that. In the meantime, go on. I’m listening.”

“There is no easy way to say this, Mr. Masters, but you appear to be listed as the next of kin for your sister, a lady by the name of Sarah Jane Miles.”

“Wrong.” His suspicions returned. “If you are telling the truth, you would know that the next of kin for my sister is her husband. A guy by the name of Kane Miles. The clue is in her surname. Listen, just who the fuck are you anyway? If this is some sort of sick fucking joke, believe me when I tell you that I will hunt you down and destroy you?”

The silence that had then followed seemed unending.

“Mr. Masters, may I apologize for not explaining the situation properly.”

Listening to the sharp intake of breath that had then traveled down the phone line, Reed was left in no doubt that something bad had happened to his twenty-nine-year-old kid sister.

“The information I have is that both your sister, Sarah Jane Miles, and her husband, Kane Bartholomew Miles, were killed in an automobile accident early this evening.”

Yeah, Reed was a tough guy all right, but even so he felt unsteady on his feet when the devastating news finally hit home. His response being, “Oh fuck no, not Sarah Jane.” When he heard another sharp intake of breath, Reed knew there was worse to come.

“Please believe me when I say that I’m genuinely sorry to distress you further, Mr. Masters, but unfortunately I have more bad news. Also declared deceased at the scene of the accident were two other females in their twenties. The best information I have, is that the individuals in question go by the names of Karen Louise Miles and Heather Hilary Miles.”

It never rains but it pours. Both of Kane’s sisters had also died in the auto wreck. Four good people, one of them his only sister, had been wiped from the face of the earth as though they had never existed.

When the cop had spoken again Reed had sensed genuine compassion in his voice.

“I need you to come and identify the bodies, sir. My information is that both of your parents passed away some years ago. The same is also true of Mr. Miles’s parents. Our records show that Mr. Miles has no other siblings other than his deceased sisters.”

At this point autopilot had taken over, and Reed calmly replied, “I’ll be right there. I just need to contact my brother first and tell him the bad news. Whatever he is doing right now, I know that he’ll want to be right there, too.”

Reed heard that ominous sharp intake of breath make its way down the line again.

“I have one final point, sir.”

“Go on.” His demeanor had become strangely icy calm by this time.

“We have a small child, a girl, rescued from the child restraint fitted to the backseat of the car.”

  “You say rescued?”

“Yes, sir. Having seen what was left of the car with my own eyes, I can only say that it’s a miracle that the child survived at all.”

“Survived. You mean the child is injured but still alive?”

“The doctors tell me that the little girl is in shock, Mr. Masters, but otherwise miraculously unharmed. At this point in time we are unsure as to the child’s identity.”

  “How old is the child?”

“I’d say three, maybe four years old. She has blonde hair, lots of it. Do you know who she belongs to, sir?”

“Yes. She’s my sister’s child. Her name is Ellie May. She went everywhere with her mother.”

Reed was roused from his introspection by Ellie May tugging at his hand. “Ice cream. You promised to buy me the biggest ice cream in the whole world, Uncle Reed.”

He smiled. “Indeed I did, pumpkin, and you will learn that your uncle never breaks a promise. When we get back we can play a game.”

“A game? Myrtle plays games with me, too.” She licked at an imaginary ice cream, urging him to hurry up.

Myrtle was their live-in nanny and had been hired specifically to take care of Ellie May after the tragedy.

He hunkered down, so his face was level with the inquisitive three-year-old. “Let’s go find you that giant ice cream, pumpkin.”

  Chapter Two

  Two hours later

Shane Masters tapped his twin brother on the shoulder. “Where’s Ellie May?”

“Taking an afternoon nap. With the size of the ice cream that kid put away, I’m surprised she made it up the stairs.”

Shane smiled. “You spoil that child.”

“With what she’s already been through, and with a future growing up without her parents, I don’t think I can spoil her enough right now.”

“I can’t argue with that. So what time is this woman due?”

Reed glanced at his watch. “Ten minutes or so. It’s best I fill you in on the details. The lady in question goes by the name of Jessica Hyde. According to her résumé, she speaks fluent Mandarin, and is looking for a full-time position as a personal assistant and interpreter. Apparently, she likes to challenge herself.”

“Challenge herself, huh? They all say that, Reed. The last two applicants we interviewed also said they were looking for a new challenge in life. Has no one got anything original or creative to say? I presume that you’ve checked out her references?”

  “You presume correctly.”

“The last woman we interviewed only spoke English, so we were wise not to hire her, especially as we have so much business with the Chinese these days.”

“Agreed. And you’ll also be pleased to know that the woman we will be seeing today is just twenty-six.”

“Twenty-six, huh? Nice age. Can I take it that she is easy on the eye?”

  “Your guess i
s as good as mine. For some unknown reason she hasn’t pinned a photograph of herself to the résumé.”

“So she could have two fucking heads for all we know?”

“Think positive. She may be gorgeous, as well as intelligent.”

“In that case, perhaps we could mix business with pleasure, Reed. It wouldn’t be the first time, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.”

There were very few times during the day when Shane wasn’t actively thinking about sex in one form or another, and he knew that Reed came equipped with the exact same thought processes. That was the thing with twins, they could read each other like a book. During their thirty-seven years on this earth, he and his brother had shared everything from schoolbooks to women. Ah yes, women. Even the sound of the word turned Shane on, causing his prick to twitch in his pants. On numerous occasions they had shared the same woman. Sometimes individually, and sometimes as a three, four, or even fivesome. In his eyes nothing could be more natural. Both of them were heavily into the darker side of sexual adventure, and as such virtually nothing was off-limits where consenting adults were concerned.

Unchallenged power and domination in the bedroom came naturally to them, and as such, both were members of fet clubs stretching the length and breadth of the country. A submissive woman was something they both gravitated toward—always had. Sometimes the challenge of a recalcitrant or disobedient submissive was even better than a willing sub, because taming out-of-control females with a bare-ass spanking was a highly erotic experience. Shane enjoyed using the flat of his hand, relishing the sound it made as it impacted naked feminine flesh. He loved the mews of contrition that came from the unruly submissive. His brother Reed preferred manmade implements of correction—an assortment of canes, whips, and floggers taking his libido skyward.
